Milestone 7 (Zineb)
Overview
This milestone was extra busy and productive since half of it was leading to the Beta presentations. We were able to get some of the basic mechanics like the VR controls, enemy behaviors and wand controls. My main task was with the VR controls. I got the player to toggle hold the wand and also press the trigger button to switch colors. I also attempted to use the primary or secondary buttons and a swinging motion of the controllers to fire the "Magic" of the wand. However, that did not work on time.
For the second half of the milestone, I focused on finalizing the environment by modelling the break room and living quarters and also making some materials and textures for those.
Challenges
The first challenge was getting the wand input to work in VR. I couldn’t use the primary and secondary controller buttons, and I was already using the grab and activate actions for the hands, so it was hard to figure out how to trigger the attack. Because of this, I had to move away from button input and try something different. The second challenge was detecting the wand swing properly. I tried using both movement and rotation to detect when the player was swinging, while the system was detecting the motion it wasn’t actually triggering the attack or using the magic correctly. This made it difficult to connect the players action the gameplay we wanted.
Another challenge faced was with the enemies going through the spaceship walls even when both game objects have colliders. This was caused by the enemy scripts where
Successes
One success was that we were able to work on the basic mechanics without running into any merge issues with version control, even though we were all working on the project at the same time. This made collaboration much smoother and saved a lot of time.
Another success was that after the beta presentation, we had a clear idea of our next steps and what needed to be improved. It helped us focus on specific areas and move forward with more direction.
